Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What happens when the course runs during the School year?
A. Outward Bound Discovery-Scottsmoor F.I.N.S. is an alternative school in Brevard County, Florida. While your child is with us, we will withdraw him/her from their current school and enroll them in ours. They will not receive tardy’s or absents while with us. If they successfully complete the wilderness portion of the program, they will receive a letter grade or ½ credits in Life Management Skills. The day after Wilderness end, the parents will re-enroll them in their previous school. They will need to make up whatever course work that school deems necessary.
Q. Can we go on vacation while my child is on course?
A. We are a F.I.N.S. (Families in Need of Services) program, this means that it is going to take the whole families support and commitment to make the program a success for the child. The student is not the only ones with responsibilities while on course. The parents also have to agree to participate with the program. We have a parent meeting that is ½ way through course that Parents/Guardians need to attend as well as a letter writing commitment, being available for the parent session at end of course and being at home visits. Parents need to commit to staying locally for the 20-day wilderness portion and during the follow-up phase until the student graduates.
Q. How do I get my child signed up to attend a program?
A. The first step in the process is to fill out the application (please be sure to have a referring counselor fill out the portion on the first page. This could be a teacher, guidance counselor, private counselor, pastor, priest, or other professional) and medical information. The Second step is to mail or fax the application and medical record to us. Once we have a course opening available we will call you and schedule an interview with you, your child, and our Intake Coordinator. At the end of the interview, you will be told if your child has been accepted and which course they are schedule to attend.
Q. What are your course dates?
A. The schedule is available by calling 321-268-5666. Courses tend to fill quickly. Please call for availability.
