Training

New Staff Training

For experienced and entry level wilderness instructors who have a desire to instruct year-round 24 to 30 day wilderness expeditions with at-risk youth populations throughout Florida, South Carolina and Alabama. We are interested in applicants with a desire for full-time or seasonal employment. Applicants with previous field experience or experience working with at-risk popultations could begin working for Discovery right away! Instructor Practicum

After participating in the New Staff Training, we offer a 9-12 week practicum for entry level or less experienced instructors. Instructors spend approximately 9 -12 weeks working as a 3rd instructor with at-risk or committed delinquent youth on 18 to 30 day wilderness expeditions throughout Florida, South Carolina and Alabama and spend time at base camps learning the "behind the scenes" of an expedition. The practicum is designed for applicants with less than 40 days of experience instructing in the field or limited experience working with at-risk populations. Practicum instructors earn a $175 weekly stipend, provided room and board and travel expenses between basse camps. College credit may be obtained as part of a field experience or internship..

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

This 10-day training is designed specifically to provide participants with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote wilderness locations. Three day refresher courses are also available to WFR certified individuals. All Staff Training

This 5-day training for Discovery staff each December and includes a number of workshops, panels, forums, and discussion groups centered on enhancing our ability to work with youth and families, in the wilderness, and as a community.

Return Staff Training

This 5-day training held in January and concentrates on certifying participants in water safety, behavior management and physical intervention and challenge course facilitation.

Protective Action Response (PAR) Training

Staff responsible for facilitating student activities receive training in maintaining a safe environment and ensuring student safety via verbal de-escalation and physical intervention techniques.

Everglades Training

A specialized training focused on knowledge and skills specific to facilitating expeditions in Florida’s Everglades National Park. Instructors may instruct courses in the Everglades, provided they have participated in this training or have comparable experience instructing in the Everglades or similar course areas.

Emergency Water Safety (EWS)

Training to certify participants in facilitating and supervising water activities such as swimming and canoeing.

Challenge Course Certification

Training to certify participants in facilitating and managing low and high rope challenge course activities.
